I am curious what apps you guys think are examples of great design… ones that not only look great, but are highly functional and joyful to use. The type of app you open for the first time and things just seem to make sense.
To start things off, here are a few of my favorites:
Snagit: Screen capture for Windows
I love this app. I don’t have to use it very often, but when I do I can always figure it out right away and it does exactly what I need.
Screenflow: Screen recording for OSX
Doing a good screen recording is hard. All the pans and zooms that you need to do can be difficult. This program makes it easy and fun.
Wufoo: Web app for creating and managing forms
Forms are a crucial part of many sites, and for novice users they can be hard to make and confusing. Wufoo makes it easy to create wee-designed forms that look great.
Rapidweaver: Web page editor for OSX
Coolest web page editor out there. Fun to use, great looking templates. For the novice Mac user that needs to create web pages, this is the way to go.
Omnigraffle 5 : Diagramming tool for OSX
I use this all the time for diagramming sites and applications. It just does what you would expect. Fast and easily. The latest version fixed most of the issues I used to have with it, and I can’t recommend it enough if you need to do any kind of diagramming.
Mint: Personal Finance Web app
I just started using Mint, and have been blown away by how easy it is to use and how well it works. Setting up online accounts with MS Money was horrendous; with Mint, its trivial and fun. Not only that, but it analyzes your finances and recommends ways to save money.
Facebook iPhone app
A shining example of the power of the iPhone platform! Clearly demonstrates the fun and power that the combination of social software and mobile computing provides.
I’d love to hear what apps you guys love!
